Curitiba you were amazing. Thank you for making the tumblr meetup yesterday the biggest in tumblr history with 1,500 users coming out to meet. A very special thanks to Lauro and Phelipe for helping get the word out. You were amazing!

TUMBLR ADORO CURITIBA. Highlights from Sunday’s meetup in Brasil:

* A One Direction flash mob performance. Really.

* This quote, from a 13-year-old girl: “I’m so excited I’m shaking!”

* A wall-sized mural of the dashboard IRL.

* Brazilian Tumblr trivia: tumblrers = tumbleros; dashboard = dashboard; LOL = euri.

See more at our Brasil staff blog, our Tumblr hearts Brasil blog and at #tumblrcuritiba.

Jennifer Hom began life as a Chinese American girl in suburban Long Island, New York. As a minority with few friends, she found happiness in drawing fairies, unicorns, magical flying unicorns, princesses, and flowers. With the help of a terribly optimistic mother, she used her countless drawings of magical beings to enroll at the Rhode Island School of Design. Now graduated with a BFA in illustration and a sweet gig at Google, she managed to find a home with climate control. She is still Chinese American, but wants to be a Broadway star.

Tonight I was hit with a hand full of eggs and huge rock on my back and called “Nigger” by a white guy in the backseat of a dark blue truck as I was riding my bike on Westheimer and Jeanetta. They drove too fast for me to get the license plate number. I had to get a cop to drive me home. This night makes me wonder how blacks did it back in the day, and why the community is looking the way it is now. I am trying not to cry, but I am in physical pain from the rock and not understanding why I deserved this.

uugh

But racism is over/this was an isolated incident/we’re all over that period now/etc etc etc.

Bessie Coleman
(1892-1926)Aviatrix
Known to an admiring public as “Queen Bess,” Bessie Coleman was the first black woman ever to fly an airplane and the first African American to earn an international pilot’s license. During her brief yet distinguished career as a performance flier, she appeared at air shows and exhibitions across the United States, earning wide recognition for her aerial skill, her dramatic flair and her tenacity. But the thrill of stunt flying and the admiration of cheering crowds were only part of Coleman’s dream. Forced for a time to work as a laundress and manicurist to make ends meet, Coleman never lost sight of her childhood vow to one day “amount to something.”
As a professional aviatrix, Coleman would often be criticized by the press for her opportunistic nature and the flamboyant style she brought to her exhibition flying. However, she also quickly gained a reputation as a skilled and daring pilot who would stop at nothing to complete a difficult stunt. Unfortunately, Coleman would not live long enough to fulfill her greatest dream — establishing a school for young, black aviators — but her pioneering achievements served as an inspiration for a generation of African American men and women. “Because of Bessie Coleman,” wrote Lieutenant William J. Powell in Black Wings, “we have overcome that which was worse than racial barriers. We have overcome the barriers within ourselves and dared to dream.”

Miss Illinois runner-up, Diane Nash was one of the pioneers of the American Civil Rights movement. She was a champion for non-violence, and one of the founders of the Student Non-Violence Coordinating Committee. She organized the Freedom Rides and the lunch counter sit-ins in Nashville, and is perhaps best known for her asking “Do you feel it is wrong to discriminate against a person solely on the basis of their race or color?”
Her actions were hugely influential in ending segregation in the south.
